Local School Celebrates Arbor Day with Sunrise Landscape + Design

Last week, Sunrise Landscape + Design donated and planted a Star Magnolia tree at Sycolin Creek Elementary School in Leesburg. This year's planting adds to a four-year partnership through which Sunrise and SCES celebrate Arbor Day.

Arbor Day—a holiday that encourages the planting of and caring for trees—originated in Nebraska on April 10, 1872, and an estimated one million trees were planted that day. The partnership here in Leesburg began when the owners of Sunrise Landscape + Design, Joe and Allison Markell, enrolled their children at SCES.

Sydney Dunlap's third grade class assisted with the planting. The Star Magnolia was planted near the school's front entrance, alongside a Red Maple, three Saucer Magnolias, and two Kwansan Cherries, which were all planted by Sunrise in previous years.

The children also learned about maintaining trees once they are planted and even helped to mulch the newest planting at SCES. Principal Derek Racino joined the children in the celebration.
