Hiring an interior designer has often been thought of as a luxury. But in reality, a designer can save you time and money.

Interior Designer Marika Meyer joined designers Barbara Hawthorn and Skip Sroka at the Washington Design Center last week to Demystify Interior Design. Moderated by Washingtonian Senior Editor Sherri Dalphonse, the discussion focused on when and why you should hire a designer.

CITY OF MANASSAS: RECYCLE, REUSE AND WIN A T-SHIRT

The City of Manassas Public Works and Utilities department is serious about recycling and investing in a healthy environment. In the past, recycling rates in the City of Manassas were at 45 percent, and they’re hoping to increase that number in 2012 and 2013. Those residents that participate in the city’s Recycle Right Program by properly sorting and recycling throughout April will receive a T-shirt; one shirt per household. Craft Attack is an eco-craft fair featuring more than 20 eco-vendors specializing in recycled, upcycled, organic, sustainable and vegan crafts.

Loudoun Recycles is a community recycling event featuring several vendors that will collect various items. Forever Green Recycling Inc. will collect electronic waste and metal scraps; Bikes for the World will collect bicycles, bike parts and sewing machines for third world countries; African Youth Education Impact will collect books, computers, desks, clothing and shoes for African children; and Secure the Call will collect old cell phones and convert them to emergency phones.

OLD TOWN MANASSAS DEBUTS FOUR ELECTRIC VEHICLE (EV) CHARGING STATIONS

The City of Manassas Public Works and Utilities department recently unveiled the new ChargePoint America Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Stations in Old Town Manassas, Va. In efforts to be environmentally friendly and cost-effective the department has proactively researched alternative energy options for customers. More than 100 Chargepoint America EV charging stations are installed throughout Virginia, Maryland and Washington, while more than 50 areas in the United States also contain the stations.
