Human Remains Found in Leesburg

LOUDOUN COUNTY,  VA (WUSA)-- Cornelia Arnold's body was found next to a burned out shed in a wooded area next to Ball's Bluff Regional Park. The 52-year-old lived in the neighborhood.

Sheriff Stephen Simpson says at 5:47 p.m. Monday,  neighbors reported seeing smoke in the woods. Police eventually found human remains.

Chris Jones with Leesburg Police, says about 40 minutes before neighbors called in the fire, some of Arnold's family called them. They wanted to know how to file a missing person's report. No report was filed.

The wooded area is owned by the Town of Leesburg and is often used by people wanting to fish or boat in the Potomac River.

Sheriff Simpson says they are investigating the case as a homicide. Officers performed a search at Arnold's home, and Simpson says her family is cooperating.

The remains have been sent to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Fairfax County. They are waiting for toxicology results before they determine the cause of death. Simpson says he does not know whether Arnold was killed before the fire, or in the fire.

Simpson says there are no suspects nor a motive. He is advising people that use the woods to take extra caution.
