Osteoarthritis: What You Know Could Save Your Joints!

Osteoarthritis: What You Know Could Save Your Joints!

According to the Arthritis Foundation, 27 million Americans live with osteoarthritis, the most common form of arthritis which involves a mechanical “wear and tear” of the cartilage that lines the inside of our joints and which, over time, can result in damage to the connective tissue and bone around the joint. The more you know about the condition, the greater your chance for success in finding the help that you need.

“The pain of arthritis is usually described as a deep ache or throbbing joint pain that is often worse upon getting up in the morning. In addition, sufferers may also experience muscle weakness around the arthritic joint and functional limitations, such as difficulty getting up and walking,” says Dr. David Wang, a specialist in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at The Kaplan Center for Integrative Medicine in McLean, Virginia (www.kaplanclinic.com).

Tips for Going Gluten Free

Many products on the store shelves today carry the words “gluten free” on them. But just what does that mean, and why is it there? The label means plenty!  But in a nutshell, it means avoiding wheat, spelt, barley and rye, and a variety of other grain-based ingredients. Gluten-free foods are being sought out by many people, including the over 3 million people who have celiac disease, as well as millions more who have a gluten intolerance or sensitivity. The good news it that while it may seem like going gluten free is a daunting task, it is actually isn’t all that difficult!

5 Things You May Not Know About Acupuncture

Each year, millions of people in America use acupuncture, a traditional Chinese approach to improving health. While acupuncture has been used in China for over 2,000 years, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), it has become increasingly popular in America over the past few decades. Still, many people are not familiar with what it is and what it can be used for.

“Acupuncture is an effective way to treat many different ailments that people experience,” explains Dr. Gary Kaplan, founder of The Kaplan Center for Integrative Medicine (www.kaplanclinic.com), located in McLean, VA.  “While some people may be skeptical at first, they end up as fans, after they try acupuncture and see how it helps improve their health and well being.”
