Tonight, join photographer Robert Merhaut for an enjoyable evening of fine art, music, and great wines. Merhaut is a local professional photographer, and tonight from 6-9p, he'll exhibit his work at the second floor loft at Shamrock Music Shoppe in Old Town Purcellville.

The evening's music will be provided by Ellen James on the Celtic Harp and Jeremy Bass on classic guitar, and Notaviva Winery will sponsor a wine tasting.

Toy drive for disadvantaged children will accept donations until December 17, 2010, at four drop-off locations at Town of Leesburg facilities

From the Town of Leesburg – The Town of Leesburg is partnering once again this year with the Marine Corps League of Loudoun County, Detachment #1205, to sponsor the annual U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots campaign.  Toys collected will go to the children of families supported by the Loudoun County Holiday Coalition and other agencies serving less fortunate families in the Loudoun and Western Fairfax area.       

Toy donations will be accepted until Friday, December 17, 2010 at the following drop-off locations at Town of Leesburg facilities:

Leesburg Town Council to Hold Public Hearing on Proposed Revisions to the Sign Ordinance

From the Town of Leesburg – On Tuesday, November 30, 2010, at 7:30 p.m., the Leesburg Town Council will hold a public hearing on proposed revisions to the sign ordinance. 

The Town Council held a public hearing on the proposed sign ordinance revisions in July 2010 and held two subsequent discussions at work sessions in September and October.  In addition, the Board of Architectural Review reviewed the proposed changes to the sign ordinance at their work session on November 3, 2010.

Leesburg Announces “Freeze Your Gizzard” Race Results

8th Annual 5K Cross Country Race and 1-Mile Fun Run Held on Saturday, November 20, 2010

From the Town of Leesburg – The Town of Leesburg Parks and Recreation Department, in partnership with Loudoun Interfaith Relief, hosted the 8th Annual Freeze Your Gizzard Cross Country 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run on Saturday, November 20, 2010.  More than 1,000 runners and walkers came out and ‘froze their gizzard’ at Ida Lee Park.   

Runners were asked to bring 2 canned food items to be donated to Loudoun Interfaith Relief’s food bank and a record 2,106 pounds of food were donated at this year’s race.  For more information about the race, please call 703-777-1368 or visit our website at www.idalee.org.

Dulles Airport Travelers on Thanksgiving Journey

Diana White, of Springfield, VA, and her son, Matthew White, are headed to Mexico City for this year’s Thanksgiving holiday. As we all waited in line for security (which shockingly took less than 10 minutes), I overheard Diana say, “Wow, this isn’t so bad.” I pulled the pair aside once we made it through security to see how their travel was going so far, the day before the busiest travel day of the year. Leesburg Police Detective Doug Shaw Receives Commendation Medal

From the Town of Leesburg -- On Saturday, November 19, 2010, Detective Doug Shaw of the Leesburg Police Department was awarded the Law Enforcement Commendation Medal by the Colonel James Wood II Chapter of the Virginia Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (VASSAR).  The Law Enforcement Commendation Medal is awarded for accomplishments and/or outstanding contributions in an area of law enforcement.

Detective Shaw is a member of the department’s Crisis Intervention Team, and in that capacity served as the primary negotiator during a botched robbery in July 2009 where two elderly members of the Leesburg community were held hostage by a gunman who threatened them with great harm. Detective Shaw was effectively able to utilize his communication skills and negotiation training to bring about the release of the two hostages and the peaceful surrender of an armed and dangerous felon.

Three Loudoun County Authors Join Forces to Support Local Non-Profit AART (All Ages Read Together)

On Friday, December 3rd from 6-8 p.m., three local authors will come together to support a local organization, All Ages Read Together (AART).

AART is a non-profit program dedicated to providing low and moderate income preschool age children with a free one-on-one reading experience with older members of the community.  AART believes that targeted personal contact of seniors with preschool children can have a positive and lasting impact on both kids and seniors.
